Thorny shrub with hard wood, in fact Theophrastus calls Hawthorn crataegus to mean strength and robustness. Plant known since ancient times for its medicinal virtues which was used for various ailments such as gout, kidney stones, pleurisy, sedative, cardiotonic and to improve blood circulation.
Modern pharmacognosy confirms the use of hawthorn leaves for the regulation of cardiac and hypotensive rhythm, as well as positive inotropic, positive dromotropic, negative bathmotropic, positive chronotropic effects, improvement of coronary flow, reduction of resistance of peripheral vessels and improvement of resistance of cardiac work to fatigue. Specifying:
- Positive inotropic effect: increase in myocardial contractility.
- Positive dromotropic effect: increase in the conduction speed of impulses.
- Negative bathmotropic effect: reduction of cardiac excitability.
- Negative chronotropic effect: reduction of heart rate.
The sedative action has also been documented by studies on animal models and in the clinic.
For the leaf infusion use 3-5 g in 200 ml of boiling water to infuse.
